04 June 1965: This race marked a turning point for then high schooler Jim Ryun (114) as he gets ready to run the mile in the Compton Relays in the Los Angeles Coliseum, in Los Angeles, CA. Ryun lined up uncertainly next to American mile record holder Jim Grelle (2nd from right) and in the first lane, (far right) world record holder Peter Snell of New Zealand. They would finish in that order, with Snell winning in 3:56.4 with Ryun timed in 3:56.6. That race gave Ryun the confidence to plan for the record race three weeks later in which he set an American record in the mile of 3:55.3 which stood as the fastest mile run by a high schooler for 36 years. .Photo by: © Rich Clarkson / Rich Clarkson & Associates.(303) 295-7770
